You get the details of the package before hand. It is not wrong to ask for the same before joining. It has become a practise to show high salary package but turn out to be useless as they calculate in terms of the cost to the company. For a fresher, if you get a chance to join there but see the prospects. If there is any bond, think before you leap. Otherwise you do not ask individuals, you try yourself only. You may be misled by others also.

By doing so it would greatly cut demand in this country on over seas oil and/or the (big bad) oil companies that our leaders speak about. Now that our dependantcy on oil has become a matter of ';national security';, I see no reason why the military should not drill and refine domestic oil. Then fed, state, and local governments could get the gas ';at cost';. This would have a two fold result. 1) Decrease US demand for overseas oil, thus lowering price at the pump. 2) Cut into the windfall profits of the oil companies. I say to our Govt that if you dont like how much money the oil companies are making... then go get your own oil.Why cant the army corp of engineers drill %26amp; refine oil for use by the military, fed, state and local govt use?

After this visual examination, the operator will have a clear idea of the possibilities of access to the two faces of the weld, which is important both for the setting up of the equipment and for the choice of the most appropriate technique.

It's not the actual oil that was modified, it was the rapeseed plant from which canola oil is made that was modified.


Plants are genetically modified so that they are more productive, disease resistant and possibly drought tolerant. There are lots of qualities and characteristics that plant breeders can select for, and reinforce in successive generations of plants.


In the case of the rapeseed plant, it was modified in the early '90's to be herbicide resistant. This allows farmers to liberally spray their fields with chemicals that are harmful to weeds without killing off their crop of canola oil-producing rapeseed.


There was a large court case a few years ago with the Monsanto corporation regarding their ';Round Up'; ready rapeseed strain that had invaded a neighboring farm -- it was settled for lots of money.

Mine leaks out before you have to change it as well, but with my last car I used a good synthetic or blended oil and a Fram oil filter that stated it was a long-life filter and didn't need to be changed every 3000 miles and did fine (totaled in a wreck, not engine problems is why I don't have it anymore). You're supose to CHANGE the oil? I just keep adding to it as it leaks out.
I was told by my mechanic that it could go over that point depending on the type of driving that you do. Driving only in town, where you have to start and stop all the time is rougher on the engine than all highway driving so it would break down the oil faster and then yes you need to change it more. So depending on how you drive, and what year your car is, plus the type or brand of oil used will all have an effect on this. But they also told me not to ever go over 5000 on it. But that was for only highway driving. You should find a mechanic that you really trust and ask them what their opinion is.

It's best to change the oil in your car at 3,000 miles because most engines have alluminum parts that wear out faster than stanless steel parts the newer the car is the more alluminum is used to build the car the older cars have iron and steel engine parts that's why back 25 years ago the milage suggested to change oil was 7,500!
that depends on your driving habits. here is my belief, if you allow your car to come up to normal operating temperatures and under normal driving conditons you can go to a comfy 7500 miles. if you get stuck in long deration traffic then 3000 is a better idea. if you do alot of highway driving 7500 is a safe choice. its better oil now then back in the 70's and 80's and damn if we just added oil, changed the filter every now and then. once again my belief and your driving habits. switch to a true synthetic oil and you change the filter every 5000 and top of then change the oil about every 50,000 but the expense of the synthetic oil my not justify it and you have to have at least 30,000 before you can run true synthetic

Well, its like what it says above, except that he's actually a couple of interviews away from being one. I just want to know what that life is like. I am married to a rig truck driver and my two grown sons are drillers. They spend weeks at a time on the road working on rig sites. It is just like being married to anyone who is employed at a job where they have to travel alot. Whether they are salesmen, long haul truck drivers or military people the time away doesn't make things easy. As the person who is at home you have to take alot of the responsibility for the maintaince of the home and keeping yourself occupied on yourself. Trust some times can be a big issue. Riggers are a different type of people too. It can be lot rougher of a life style out there. Guys tend to harden up mentally when they aren't in the presence of their spouses much. Engineers can be very stoic, conservative and if you don't keep him laughing very serious otherwise he could provide an excellent life. As far as the gas and oil industry goes you could move frequently or get sent to the far reaches of the earth unless he excells and gets an executive position, of course that will take some work.

As a petroleum engineer you could expect to make anywhere around $66,970 to $111,910 depending where you work. Im sure they are working on it. It has probably been done already, the problem is the cost. It costs more to make it than it does to pump and refine the already made crude.
The cost of the process is definitely coming down, and for certain grades is already competitive with pumped petroleum, at least at the $70 per barrel level. The biggest disadvantage is that artificially made oils just don't offer the range of functions that natural petroleum does-fuel, plastic feedstock and so on, For further info, I'm copying the answer to your previously, related question:





Actually, this is a very good question. I've read several times about a pilot plant operation that renders organic waste into combustible oils and ash. The pilot plant was set up to use the many tons of turkey waste that had been going to a landfill every day. The process is a high temperature, high pressure reduction of the waste, with less than 25% of the recovered oils being used as process heat and for electricity generation. In other words, a self sustaining process, with a high oil yield and a huge volume reduction in landfill able waste. The last article I read was about a year ago, so I don't know if the process has progressed beyond the pilot plant stage or whether significant difficulties were encountered.

Sometimes nothing! Sometimes air, gas, chemicals or water in order to either pressurise the well more or move oil from one chamber to another.
i am not exactly sure just what you mean, but, i have heard that for years the u.s.a. is filling old empty wells from oil we buy from overseas. most of them remain as huge storage tanks, so to speak, if we ever have another disaster such as a world war, we would not be caught short on oil. i hope this is what you were looking for today.

Our family lives in Qatar for the past 4 years and Qatar is the safest place we ever experienced after spending years in Florida and France. You need to sign your contract overseas (best deals because you usually get a nice salary, + housing, + car, + insurance) and you also get a tax break of $ 80 K with the IRS if you are US citizen. If you come here and look for a ';local hire'; position it will be more difficult, and the deals are not good. You need to make sure housing is fully paid by company whatever your require (appartment, villa, etc.) Rentals have doubled and tripled in the past 2 years and you can not find a villa under 15,000 QR (4,000 $ US). Inflation has been very high in the past 2 years (officially 12 % but it is over 20 %).


There is an amazing Education City shaping up and several US colleges have already moved in (Texas A%26amp;M, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, VCU, Weill Cornell with a teaching hospital of 350 beds to open soon).


You have to know that we are over 830,000 inhabitants in this country and 3/4 are expatriates (majority coming from south Asia) and about 200,000 Qataris. Right now they try to have more Qataris get good positions and have more Qatari women in the working force, but there is still space for people with good education and experience. Engineering and medical field will always be in need.

There are some engineers that have assignments on offshore platforms as maintenance engineers or as supervisors but primarily they work from an office environment. There are also some onshore field assignments that engineers have again working in similar capacities as those offshore.





There are some engineers that work field assignments doing construction and modifications to various facilities.





If you work for a major company you will find that female engineers are treated just the same an males and can do quite well if they are competent. That is what really dominates in the oil field...competence.

Ignore the geology answer unless you want to be a geologist. A degree in mechanical engineering is sufficient to get onto a trainee engineer course - at the moment, there is a real shortage of well engineers/drilling engineer - if I were you, that would be the discipline I'd aim for. If you can get a position as a mudlogger offshore, that can be a good opening into well engineering. I don't know where you're located, but a move to Aberdeen would be a good start!

In addition to having all kinds of engineers, the oil and gas industry tends to have their engineers deal with all kinds of tasks related to the various disciplines. You may be a mechanical engineeer but your assignment may require you to do some civil, chemical or electrical engineering.





In general petroleum engineers can be limited by their degree if they ever need or want to change industries. Also their focus is usually ';down hole'; only.
I guess it would either be Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering depending on what you want to specialise in. If you wish to design the structures of the rigs then I reckon Civil but if you want to be involved in the machinery then I would say Meachanical. Talk to Shell, BP, Texaco etc for some advice.





Also do you want to be an Engineer or a technician (Engineer is more theoretical and problem solving, technician is hands on) as these would require different types of courses (Engineers need degrees).
In the oil and gas industry there are mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, instrumentation engineers, marine engineers, civil engineers, chemical engineers, petroleum engineers and process engineers, together with other specialist disciplines like mud engineers, drilling engineers and certainly more that I have not named. Generally however Mechanical , Electrical, Civil and Chemical are the basic skills needed for this industry and the others are people of these categories who have further developed and refined their skills. Geologists are not normally categorized as engineers.

You've heard wrong. The current demand for engineers is very high and there is a shortage. It's very lucrative as well. Not that many people want to go into engineering, because ';it's hard'; and it is easier to party and major in English (but they don't get jobs when they graduate).





Sometimes the industry is cyclical, mostly depending on the price oil. When oil is high, refineries and rigs are being built so more oil can be sold. Engineers are then in high demand.





With China and India's growth, their demand for oil should keep the price steady for several years to come.





Right now, new engineering graduates just out of college make about $57,000-$61,000.

Engineering isnt too difficult a job to get into if you have the right qualifications. Not sure on the salaries I am afreaid, but as they are off shore they are higher than they would be if you were working on the main land, due to the danger factor etc.

Any university with a strong engineering program will support this but it's too long a list to have here. Pick an area of the the country and then look for engineering programs. In High School, you need to take 4 years of math and science. Whenever possible take advanced placement courses for college credit.

Well some schools have oil and gas or petroleum engineering. Other schools with a strong chemical engineering program will have a fuels option....so you'll be a chemical engineer, but your engineering electives will focus on fuels. You actually don't need that option, a regular chemical engineer does the trick, but it gives you a competitive edge. (i'm a chem engineer with a focus in bio and i'm getting requests to interview with oil companies). List is probably long.





U.S. we don't have A-level...from what i understand about A-level (which is limited)...A-level is probably what you want. Pretty much 4 years of science and 4 years of math....they'll want to start you off in calc....so you want to have at the very least taken pre calc.

There is tons of work available but more in the refining end. There are lots of jobs in Chemical Valley in West Virginia and in Texas along the gulf coast.

And... just for your information... (since I am a sternwheeler enthusiast, and in fact own one) Robert Fulton's sternwheeler ';New Orleans'; which launched in 1911 - was of course a ';steam engine'; powered vessel... it too, had a cylinder with a 36'; diameter.
He may have been referring to some of the reciprocating steam engines. There were catwalks that you would travel to oil bearings while the engine was running. They ran quite slowly, 50 to 90 rpm but it was amazing to be that close while it was turning. Loved the old steam days.
Yep. I have done many times. Dont really go in to oil unless changing out a piston, but do go in the inspect and take readings. Go into the crankcase as well.

For starters, not all commissioning or start up engineers are chemical. Many are mechanical engineers. Much of the more difficult equipment involved in refineries and chemical plants are mechanical in nature therefore it is natural for mechanical engineers to be involved. I have even worked with at least one who was an electrical engineer.





Most of the ones I have worked with learned their craft by their experience working in operating plants and on construction assignments. I have never heard of any who were certified.

Yup, i'm currently based on a semi submersible drilling unit in Nigeria and at any one time we carry a total of 7 mechanics/engineers. That's a total of 14 employed on board (month on / month off with crews working back to back). About 50% are mechanics employed straight into the driling industry but the other 50% came from either Merchant Navy or the shipping industry. A Cadetship will give you a good solid Engineering background with the opportunity to advance ultimately to the rank of Chief Engineer. Our Engineers onboard are currently earning around 80K per annum with bonuses and the Chief Engineer probably about 100K. Also with the oil industry booming just now and most drilling companies building many new drillships, semis and jackups there is lots of work out there.

You do realize that capitalist oil companies only control 18% of the oil worldwide and the rest has been nationalized, right?





Gasoline prices were recently at unprecedented lows - no profits, no oil, no western civilization, new dark age. They had to go up some.





The ';recovery'; would have failed regardless. Government stimulation used to be believed to help in recessions (oh, some 30 years ago) but has been proven to be a short term fix that looks good at first but then leads to massive inflation that sinks the economy worse. Using it is pure populism/short-term thinking. Tax cuts do work and have resulted in higher government income when passed (like the Bush tax cut for everyone) but unfortunately, Congress has the purse strings and tends to approve higher Presidential budgets, more pork, and basically spends the increased income and then some. Happens every time. Term limits would greatly damper this sort of behavior but even people elected to national office in one state should be easily fireable by the board of directors (the people).

It also seems chemical engineers are more likely to be the ones to work at a refinery, separating the products. Petroleum engineers tend to work in the Exploration and Production end of the business whereas chemical engineers can work in either.





In terms of percentage, there are more mechanical and electrical engineers than petroleum or chemical engineers in either end of the business. Of the two options, which type of engineer is most likely to work at an oil/gas refinery?
I would say most likely a Chemical Engineer would be found at the refineries. Most of the Petroleum Engineers I know work in the field and develop the most efficient and cleanest ways to extract the oil. Refining is a chemical process and a Petroleum engineer will learn about the refining process but most likely to be found in the field. Then again if your passion is in the refineries but feel as if you'd prefer the petroleum schooling chances are you'd find a job where you want. The nice part about that is you would understand the whole start to finish process. Hope this helps.
Chemical engineers usually work in the labs in a refinery checking product streams etc., if they work in a refinery at all.

actually I think engineers never work on anything they design .If they did i think they would change a lot of things.

Take it. Cross country pipelines are civil projects more than anything. Sure, there's a pipe, but there's a hell of a lot of earth getting moved, and maybe even some cement for your to play with.

How much? That depends. Just a raw BS degree won't get you too far. Also that depends on what you can do. How valuable you are to the company etcetera.





If you are a BS, new grad, expect to earn about $35 K. MS = $45 Ph.D in an R%26amp;D can hope to earn about $55-60; Add an MBA with any of the above, you will earn an additional $10 to $15; additional years of experience will earn more but what you did in your previous job and what the last employers thought of your work will earn additional $$s. How you fit in the current requirement is #1 in their offer of money.





The speed with which you rise in the ranks, (hence your income) is directly proportional to your educational qualifications and MEANINGFUL experience.





With oil companies, the benefits are good. Therefore, money alone is not always that important. The future will look bright. You will have excellent oppt'ys if you ever leave Chevron. Stock options are good.

I am not positive about Chevron but I myself am getting into the business side of the environmental industry and I know there is a lot of money to be made. Beyond oil there is a growing industry to environmental services because of the increasingly strict laws on businesses who create waste.
I wouldn't suggest going into engineering just for the money. If you have a masters in engineering then you're not going to have to worry about making money. But it's always better to have a job you love. Just find a field you enjoy working in and it will be worth more to you than than you would get from trying to make the most money.





but if you're just curious as to what chemical engineers make than you can expect to start making 50,000 to 70,000 anything more would be rather rare for a starting salary.
depends on what level you reach. bs, ms ,phd. it could be from 35 -200 k depending on their need and your education AND experience. a bs with no indusrtrial experience will earn less then a nbs with five years in the plant environment where profit motivates the company to make things happen fast, rather than slow. example, using heat and pressure to drive the manufacture of a ketone in a wet environment.
