In oil industry two main segments of operations exist ,first one is Upstream which is mainly concerned with the exploration, drilling, production and management of exploitation activities.The second one is known as Down stream which is mainly dealing with the refining, quality control and product development etc.
Luckily Chemical engineer has got crucial role to play in both the segments i.e. upstream as well as down stream. In up stream they can work for Drilling as drilling engineers or Mud engineers,Production engineers or Reservoir Engineers.
In Down stream it is the open field for chemical engineers they can work for almost all the activities.
