They do use other disciplines. Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical and Software engineering or just being the right person for the job.
I did Electrical and Electronic Engineering and two of the 54 people in my class got their first jobs in the petrochemical industry. Well, three if you include me working for Whessoe Systems and Controls. We did instrumentation and control for storage facilities. One of my friends worked for Flopetrol Johnston Schlumberger and the other for some processing facility design group.
