I am sorry but you would be better getting the details from a book or website but briefly:





A geologist uses lots of data to determine where hydrocarbons may be trapped in a layer of sandstone above a layer of carboniferous sediment.





The geologists work is checked by using reflected shock waves to work out where the layers and densities of rock is.





A contractor drills down to the suspected layer.





The license holder hope that there is Oil (or gas).What is the detailed engineering behind oil exploration?
Essentially they set off explosions that send out shockwaves thru the rock- the resulting echos on a sonar system shows in 3D where the oil is located.





Finding the oil is the easy part- trying to rig a drill to get it out is the hard part
