They hire many technical people. Geologists are valuable in determining where to drill. They hire many petroleum and chemical engineers for the refineries. Most pipeline engineers are petroleum or mechanical engineers. Many electrical and software engineers to make controls, circuits, and programs. Materials engineers to improve pipe and machine life.
Truth is, they hire almost any discipline, but most engineers in house are either project engineers/managers that coordinate projects and do not do technical work, or PhD types that work in R%26amp;D. The contractors are generally the ones that do the hard core technical work.
